📚 Education Loan Guide & Frequently Asked Questions

1. What documents are needed for Vidya Lakshmi / PM-Vidyalaxmi portal registration?
To apply via the official Vidya Lakshmi / PM-Vidyalaxmi portal, you generally need: KYC documents (Aadhaar & PAN card for student and co-borrower), 10th and 12th mark sheets, entrance exam scorecard (JEE, CUET, etc.), college admission letter with fee structure breakdown, income proof (Itr/salary slips or income certificate from competent authority for CSIS/subvention eligibility), and passport-size photographs.
2. How do SBI, PNB, and Canara Bank disburse semester fees to private colleges?
Public sector banks (SBI, PNB, Canara Bank, etc.) never hand cash or checks directly to the student for tuition fees. Instead, once the loan is sanctioned, the bank issues disbursements directly to the college's official bank account semester-by-semester or year-by-year upon presentation of valid semester fee demand letters and attendance/progress reports. Hostel fees are disbursed similarly or directly to authorized hostel accounts.
3. What is the difference between a co-borrower and a guarantor?
A co-borrower (typically a parent or legal guardian) is considered a primary joint owner of the loan right from Day 1. Their income is evaluated to determine loan eligibility, and they share equal legal responsibility for repayment. A guarantor, on the other hand, acts as a secondary surety who promises to pay off the debt *only if* the primary borrower defaults. Under government schemes like CGFSEL (loans up to ₹7.5 Lakhs), collateral and third-party guarantors are strictly exempted.
